New Nightstop Service Launches in Glasgow
Nightstop UK has welcomed a brand new service to the network, with the launch of Simon Community Scotland's Nightstop Glasgow.
The service will be run by local homelessness charity Simon Community Scotland, and will provide emergency overnight accommodation for young people, in the homes of trained and vetted community volunteers in the Glasgow area.
The service has already recruited and trained four volunteer hosts, but is calling for more volunteer households to come forward and offer their spare rooms to help young people experiencing homelessness.
Paula Hannigan, Head of Nightstop and Volunteering at Simon Community Scotland, said:
“We already have a few wonderful volunteers who are trained ready to take in young people which is a great start.
“We want to make sure every young person who comes to Simon Community Scotland’s Nightstop in Glasgow can be offered a safe and welcoming place to stay in times of crisis. This will only be possible if more people in the community are willing to open their homes to young people in need.”
Geraldine Feeley, one of the first people to volunteer for Nightstop Glasgow, said:
“I was inspired by the ordinary people featured in the Channel 4 documentary [Would You Take in a Stranger?} who opened their homes to provide a safe place for a young person for a night.
“I hope that, in future, any young person that stays at my home will feel safe and welcome.”
Ian Forster Nightstop UK Network Manager, said:
"Nightstop UK oversees 30 Nightstop services across the UK, and are extremely pleased to welcome Nightstop Glasgow to the Nightstop UK network.
“We are proud to be associated with Simon Community Scotland, an organisation which shares our vision of providing a safe place for young people who experience homelessness in our communities.”
