Max's story

March 9th, 2017

Max is 21, his family moved around a lot when he was growing up. He didn’t have a great relationship with his father. When he was 12 it got too much and he left.

He stayed with family and friends, staying with people wherever he could, but after a while “you feel in debt, I was always overcompensating. I did my best to be the perfect guest but there wasn’t always somewhere to go. When I slept rough, I had my own little bench I use to go to.”

Max was still at school, and he remained committed to always looking for ways to get out and be constructive, which led to him studying a lot. He finished his A Levels, but he was older now, no one had his back . “It was lonely, scary and I was sleeping with three eyes open”

After a while he couldn’t continue, so went to a local youth centre. They told Max about Nightstop, and he was placed with Nightstop hosts for a few months.

“The hosts go well out of their way to help people like me. It’s because of them I am where I am now. If I didn’t have them and I had to sleep rough for one more night I don’t know if I would have made it.

Max was supported to move onto permanent accommodation, and now has a job that he loves.  He said “I have a room with a lock on a door, a washing machine, a shower and I use it just because I can now”
