Guardian & Observer’s Charity Appeal 2017 Passes £500,000 Mark
Generous supporters of The Guardian & Observer’s Charity Appeal 2017 have donated more than £500,000 in the 10 days since the Appeal launched.
The Appeal is raising vital funds for young people experiencing homelessness in the UK, with all donations going towards the work of charities Depaul UK, Centrepoint, and Naccom.
The Nightstop UK network is managed by Depaul UK, and as a result the service has already featured prominently in the Guardian and Observer newspapers and their online versions, with volunteers and young people sharing their stories and encouraging readers to donate and help to #breakthechain of homelessness.
Nightstop Oldham volunteer host Helen Rathmill and Nightstop user Stan’s stories recently featured in the Observer, on 10 December.
As a Nightstop host, Helen offers her spare room to people experiencing homelessness for a few nights of every week, providing a safe, welcoming place for a young person in crisis.
In the article, Helen said of her reasons for volunteering for Nightstop UK: “I was looking to do something different. I wanted to change something in my local community but didn’t just want to work in a charity shop. I would say [the young people] are only strangers for the first five minutes. It’s just a vulnerable young person who needs a bed for the night.”

Last weekend, Guardian writers hosted a telethon to support the Appeal, taking record pledges of more than £53,000 over the phones. During the telethon one generous couple pledged £1,000 to the Appeal. The Appeal continues to run over the Christmas period.
Nicola Harwood, Depaul UK’s Associate Director, Prevention, said:
“We have already been overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of the public and their fantastic support of The Guardian & Observer Charity Appeal 2017. To reach £500,000 within just 10 days is unbelievable.”
“The Appeal will give Nightstop a boost for years to come. The donations raised will ultimately mean that we can help more young people across the UK who are facing a night on the street. Words can’t express how grateful we are to The Guardian & Observer’s readers. Your support really will help us to keep more young homeless people safe.”
