First Placement for Nightstop GM
April 23rd, 2018
Following a successful launch in 2017, Nightstop Greater Manchester has hit another milestone with its first placement on March 30.
This placement is the culmination of many months of hard work by the team at Nightstop in Manchester. Since the service launched in November last year, the team has been busy promoting it, recruiting hosts and making links with referral partners.
Nightstop Coordinator Dave Batchelor says: “Our vision for Greater Manchester is to create a vibrant volunteering community that can make a difference in the city long term.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to all those hosts who have read articles, seen us on twitter or watched a documentary and been inspired to join us on the journey of volunteering. You’ll make a huge difference in the lives of young people – and we think you’re amazing.”
Dave has worked for Depaul UK, the charity which manages Nightstop UK, for more than ten years. He’s passionate about developing a Nightstop service in Greater Manchester that offers a long term solution for young people, helping them to resolve family conflict and return home where it is appropriate.
Mediation services will be an integral part of the Manchester service, and at the beginning of the year, Depaul UK facilitated the training of 20 volunteer mediators. These people will be able to provide much need support to Nightstop services in South Yorkshire, the North East, Greater Manchester and Cumbria.
Kate is a new host with Nightstop Greater Manchester. She said: “We’ve been Nightstop hosts in Cheshire for a few years, so when Greater Manchester Nightstop started up it seemed only natural to offer our services.
“When we hosted our first guest we were so nervous, but one look at the vulnerable young person standing on our doorstep very quickly showed us that they were far more scared than we were! Over the years it has been a real joy to see how big an impact a warm bed, shower and meal can have on someone’s well-being.
“It’s very humbling to be able to play even a small part in helping to tackle homelessness in Greater Manchester; we’re supported by a passionate and capable team who care very deeply about supporting young people to simply have a roof over their heads – something most of us take for granted.”
