Nightstop Turns 30!
October marks a very special month for Nightstop UK - the emergency accommodation service for young homeless people celebrates its 30th Birthday!
That’s right, this month marks 30 years since the launch of the first ever Nightstop and we are looking forward to a month of celebrations to honour our wonderful hosts and the young people supported by the service.
Where It All Began
The first ever Nightstop service was created in Leeds in 1987 in response to report Faith In The City, by the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Commission on Urban Priority Areas.
Local churches and advice centres were concerned that they were often unable to help when 16-to-25-year-olds approached them asking for somewhere to sleep for the night. As a result many young people were being forced to sleep rough due to the shortage of emergency accommodation in the city.
The idea that developed in response to this situation became known as Nightstop - one-night-at-a-time emergency accommodation in the spare rooms of trained and vetted volunteers.
Barnardo's Church and Community Action worked with local people to develop Nightstop Leeds which first became operational in October 1987.
Nightstop now consists of 33 services across the UK and last year provided 13,000 bed-nights to more than 1,300 young people. With an estimated 83,000 young people experiencing homelessness in the UK every year, Nightstop is now needed more than ever.
Indeed, the demand for Nightstop beds continues to grow. In 2015 Nightstop sadly had to turn away 800 young people, simply because we didn’t have enough spare rooms for them.
The Nightstop model continues to respond to this need from young homeless people in regions across the UK, and later this year a Nightstop Manchester service will open.
And the Nightstop model hasn’t just stayed within our shores. In 2017 Nightstop Toronto launched in Canada and there has even been a Nightstop service all the way down under in Australia.
Happy Birthday Nightstop
At the end of October a special event will take place at Westminster to celebrate the achievements of Nightstop UK.
The celebratory Reception will be held at Speaker’s House within The Palace of Westminster on 31 October and will bring together Nightstop volunteers and staff from the past three decades as well as MPs, Peers and funders in the historic house of the House of Commons’ Speaker, Rt. Hon. John Bercow MP.
Throughout October there will be lots more stories and news in celebration of Nightstop’s 30th Birthday and you can keep up to date with all things Nightstop by visiting our website and following us on twitter.
Nightstop Needs You!
Although we are looking forward to celebrating the achievements of Nightstop services across the country, we know there is still so much we need to do.
Our aim is that no young person should have to sleep in an unsafe place, but to achieve this we need your help more than ever. If you would like to support Nightstop UK by making a donation in honour of our 30th Birthday, or volunteering for your local service then get in touch today.
